So many people have told me to wear a coat, a scarf, face mask, etc. outside or I will catch a cold. I’ve heard many mothers telling their children to bundle up so they won’t catch a cold. But is there truth to getting sick because you’re cold?
I researched the topic and found some answers at Harvard Health. On their website they mention that you probably can’t catch a cold due to exposure to moderate cold temperatures. During the winter, people spend more time indoors, in closer contact with other people who can pass germs to each other. The influenza virus stays airborne longer when air is cold and less humid.
Canadian researchers who have examined hundreds of medical studies believe that there is no need to worry about moderate cold exposure. But for extended periods of cold you can get frostbite or hypothermia.
I think all of that makes sense. I’ve always wanted to know if going out in the cold means getting a cold.
