Imagine if you were a mother and your son’s school called to ask you to pick up your son who was having symptoms of a stroke?  That’s what happened to Alishia Hicks on May 4, 2022.  Instead of calling 911, the school called the mother at home to report that D’Andre Hicks needed to be picked up.  Yet Alishia Hicks was at her home in Boston, MA in a wheelchair and it was an emergency.

Alishia Hicks explained to the nurse that there was a history of strokes that runs in the family.  She knew it was serious right away. D’Andre Hicks reported to the nurse that he felt dizzy and he was shaking and numb on the left side.  According to CBS News, Alishia Hicks, D’Andre’s mother,  pressed the school to call 911 because she couldn’t get there quickly enough since she was in a wheelchair. According to the report, she claimed it took over a half-hour before the school finally made the call.

CBS News reports that Alishia Hicks told the nurse “Please dial 911, he could be stroking,'” The school nurse said, “I don’t think so, I don’t think it’s that serious, I don’t think I need to dial 911.'” Eventually, Alisha Hicks got on the phone with the State Department of Children and Families.  She screamed, “He’s gonna die! They’re gonna let him die!”

D’Andre Hicks was then taken to Tufts Medical Center and he was treated for an ischemic stroke and removal of a blood clot from his brain.  He survived but he could have died.
