Do you ever wonder if you can pursue a new career later in life? Suzanne Watson went to medical school at Wake Forest University in North Carolina in her 50’s and began her new career as a psychiatrist. She initially enrolled in medical school in her 20’s but she realized that raising her four young children at the time was challenging. She was pregnant and had a nine month old baby at the time that she planned to go through medical school. Suzanne raised her children and was ordained as a priest. However, a few months before she was ordained as a priest, her husband committed suicide. He had suffered from depression. It was a tragedy for Suzanne and she felt that her husband attached a stigma to his mental health which prevented him from seeking proper treatment.
Suzanne’s passion for psychiatry was likely a driving force behind her success in medical school. Today she is in private practice in Del Mar, CA. She credits her son for encouraging her. It’s never too late to follow your dreams. Suzanne hopes that she can help others with mental health issues such as depression. Her personal experience, having endured her husband’s struggles and suicide, helps her feel compassionate about helping others.
