There have been cases of various items being left behind in a person’s body after surgery.  But often it’s a story about someone feeling something different that alerts them to a problem or perhaps an X-ray that shows something that isn’t supposed to be there.  But for Tom Hadrys in the UK, he found out quite differently that something was amiss.

Tom’s surgeon was driving home after his patient’s hernia surgery and reviewing the surgery he had just completed in his head.  Then it clicked – he realized he had left several items in his patient’s abdominal cavity.  The surgeon drove back to the hospital.  Tom Hadrys was waking up from surgery and in the recovery ward at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton UK.  His surgeon approached him and whispered in his ear.  He said, “We made a mistake, and I’ve got to take you back to surgery.”

What that meant was that the surgeon and his team had left behind a medical specimen bag and a section of his bowel.  Tom Hadrys went back into surgery and the items were removed from his abdominal cavity. While situations like this are a rare occurrence according to the hospital, it was unusual to have the surgeon remember the mistake while driving home.  Tom Hadrys was compensated by the hospital and given an apology.
