EMVision, an Australian medical device company, announced in July 2024 that it has disclosed its First Responder Proof of Concept device, designed for road and air ambulances. The new scanner weighs less than 25 pounds and is the size of a backpack. Paramedics can scan and send images to stroke experts from the site of a suspected stroke. In the field, CT and MRI imaging are not readily available so this will increase the speed of diagnosis and treatment. A conventional mobile CT scanner can weigh at least 1,100 pounds. Mobile stroke units equipped with CT scanners are financially prohibitive and are limited in number.
The First Responder device uses electromagnetic imaging and AI to distinguish between hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes in minutes. The device can be operated manually or with a smartphone or tablet, and the images can be sent to a radiologist or neurologist for diagnosis via cellular network. It can provide full brain coverage in a single scan.
The portable scanner will go through a regulatory pathway for approval which will include a series of studies and controlled clinical investigations before approval. It is currently not for sale nor evaluated by the FDA or other global regulators. But hopefully the device will be available in the upcoming year.
