According to psychiatrists, with increasing body dysmorphia among men and women, mental health conditions (anxiety to depression) are prevailing.  Hair loss can have a negative effect on one’s physical perception.

There is a lack of preventive drugs or products to limit hair loss. The only approved drugs for hair loss are Propecia and Minoxidil. Both of these drugs are not very effective for hair loss treatment.

Many are going toward hair transplantation, which can be costly and painful sometimes.

According to Wilma Bergfeld, MD, we now have several options for the treatment of alopecia, and more options are on the way.

According to the CEO of Follicum (Swedish biotech), several patients are waiting for new treatment options for alopecia.

Transplantation vs topical treatments:

Transplantation is an invasive procedure that is associated with infections. Besides, several patients require more than one session of transplants due to hair loss.

While tropical treatments provide a non-invasive, effective, and painless option for hair loss, most patients prefer topical treatments and drugs for their problems.  Several biotech products are in late-stage clinical trials to treat baldness in the last twenty years.

Breezula:

The reason behind baldness is the sensitiveness of hair follicles to scalp hormones. After binding of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) to hair follicles, it shrinks. It shrinks the follicles and causes hair loss. As a result of this mechanism, scientists are developing a topical drug Breezula which can reverse baldness. This drug works by blocking the negative effect of dihydrotestosterone on the scalp.

According to the CEO of Cassiopea, this drug antagonizes DHT’s adverse effects around follicles. This antagonizing action of the drug slows down or even stops hair loss. Hair follicles that are not entirely shut down due to dihydrotestosterone, tend to reproduce new hair.

Low-light laser treatment:

This treatment is commonly known as LLLT (low-level laser therapy). LLLT is an FDA-approved solution to treat hair loss among men and women. LLLT is a non-invasive technique that uses a pain-free light beam for the stimulation of hair follicles.

The approved light beams by the FDA are 635 nm and 655 nm. LLLT induces the regrowth of hair by giving them a fuller and thicker appearance.

JAK inhibitors:

Jack inhibitors, as Xeljanz (tofacitinib), can increase hair growth among men and women. Janus Kinase inhibitors are topical products, which we apply directly over the scalp. According to clinical trials, JAK inhibitors are effective and safe for the treatment of hair loss. According to Dr. Bergfeld, almost eight clinical trials of JAK inhibitors for the treatment of alopecia are in progress. However, some of them are already in the preclinical phase.

Hair loss is a common problem among men and women. Hair transplant is the most common treatment for hair loss, but it is an invasive, painful, and costly procedure. Therefore, people are now waiting for topical treatment of hair loss, which is on its way.
