The late Dr. Norman Leaf, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, CA was not only an extremely talented surgeon but he also contributed greatly to R.A.W. (Rebuilding America’s Warrior), a non-profit organization that was founded by nurse Maggie Lockridge in 2007. Dr. Leaf passed away in 2019 but he will always be remembered for his dedication to R.A.W. He helped contact at least 300 to 400 plastic surgeons that are part of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons to take part in this philanthropic cause. When Dr. Leaf joined R.A.W. he was immediately able to get 250 people to sign up from all over the country.
Dr. Norman Leaf has said that veterans are concerned with a scar on the face. “It’s not just vanity — these scars are remnants that go very deep into the psyche. PTSD is a real thing. Anything we can do to improve scars or deformities, even if they’re non-functional like an artificial limb, improves that.”
As for how R.A.W. is funded, it’s mostly through grants. http://www.rebuildingamericaswarriors.com
If you, or a soldier or veteran you know, might qualify for additional reconstructive surgery visit the R.A.W. website.
