The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism published an article on May 3rd, 2022 indicating that two types of endocrine-disrupting chemicals may be associated with reduced bone mineral density in adolescent males (12-19 year olds). The two types of endocrine-disrupting chemicals are per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and phthalates. These are two families of environmental endocrine disruptors. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals used in nonstick cookware, clothing, and food packaging, and have been found in U.S. water supplies. Phthalates are used in personal care products, food processing, and children’s toys.
Even though the study involved both males and females, the researchers did not find the same effect in girls. Bone mineral density tracks across the life course, so if replicated in longitudinal cohorts, this finding may have implications for lifelong skeletal health.
