Each year I go to my eye doctor for a vision check-up. Each time I purchase a pair of eyeglasses conveniently located at my doctor’s office. It seems so natural to purchase the glasses at the store when I finish my appointment. But I dislike the way the salesperson brings me some of the most expensive glasses to try on. I usually buy a designer pair and then I feel bad for spending so much money.
Why are designer glasses so expensive? Well, of course you pay for the “designer.” But there’s also the issue of the Italian manufacturer, Luxottica. They manufacture for many of the big brand names. Luxottica also owns many of the stores that carry glasses. The markup is huge.
Do I really need designer glasses? The answer is no. I don’t need that tiny designer name on the glasses to impress people. I can get a no-name pair for much less. And if I find that I have to have a designer pair, I can certainly take the prescription from my doctor and purchase the frames at a discount store. There are many places that will put in the lenses for a nominal fee. It’s time to save my money!
