When I needed to get a crown, my dentist automatically suggested metal crowns. They are unattractive but strong. It was in the back of my mouth so I said OK. What I didn’t know was that dentists cannot see through a metal restoration whether it is a crown/bridge or filing. Therefore the dentist cannot always diagnose or see if there is a problem under the tooth.
Once I had the metal crown removed, the doctor noticed decay. I now use porcelain although it is more expensive. I’ve also had metal fused to porcelain in the past but it also doesn’t look good because you can see some of the metal. I wish I had known about the limitations of metal crowns. My dentist showed me the X-ray and it looks like a white blob on the X-ray. You cannot see any issues with the tooth on the X-ray. It is amazing when you go to a more experienced dentist you get better work and better explanation in regard to options.

My dentist did the same thing. He didn’t even offer me anything except a metal crown. Then someone told me it would look terrible in my mouth. I told the dentist and he said he already prepared it. So he said I had to pay for it if I changed. Also, I had a crown with another dentist and she used glue that didn’t stick. The crown kept coming off and she blamed me. When I went to a new dentist, she said the previous dentist had used the wrong glue. There are so many dentists but you really have to look around to find a good one.
