I did a lot of research about Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty. I actually watched a live procedure on YouTube. It is supposed to be a great option since it has a relatively good safety profile for documented cases so far. The physician basically inserts a tube down your throat and then stitches your stomach together (cinches it) and so it’s smaller. There is a lot of information about it on the internet.

So far, the procedure is not covered by insurance. I really thought it would be a good idea so I was willing to pay for it out of pocket. But right before I was scheduled for the procedure, the finance department at UCLA asked me to sign a document. I would be responsible for any complications from the procedure and I would need to pay UCLA in cash within 10 days. There was no limit or estimate on the amount that could be due. So I could not sign that document. Imagine my psychological well being if I woke up from anesthesia and owed thousands of dollars in addition to what I already paid?

I am not sure if there are other hospitals or endoscopy centers where you pay for the procedure and they include the possibility of something going wrong. In other words they work that into the total price. It’s expensive as it is and you have to pay in full before the procedure. So adding on a potential extra charge is not workable for me.

If insurance companies cover the procedure in the future, I will do it. I also recommend that if you do have the procedure you go to someone who has performed it a lot. I watched a doctor on YouTube who performed it so many times he was obviously very relaxed and confident. But it’s a good idea to check out the medical facility and look for reviews.
