I have Diabetic foot neuropathy and if you don’t know what it is, you’re lucky. It is a nerve disease that causes numbness and tingling in your feet as well as a burning sensation. I have had trouble with blood sugar levels during my life and that’s common for people with this diagnosis. I have had diabetes so it’s not a surprise to me.

Anyway, picking out shoes is important. I wear comfortable, cushioned socks. The shoes I wear need to fit well and have support. I buy my shoes at the Walking Company. They have comfortable walking shoes with good support. I cannot wear heels or sandals. I check my feet constantly for infection. After I take my shoes off, I clean my feet and put ointment on them. Even though it’s a big hassle, I have read statistics about diabetic foot infections that lead to amputation. So the choice between super cool high heels and comfort is better than an infection or even an amputation.

I recommend that anyone suffering from this disease should realize that you are not alone and there are many people out there wearing tennis shoes to a party who might feel bad that they can’t wear heels. But circulation is poor, infection is a great possibility and the risks are great when you don’t take care of your feet.
