A Woman Sued Her Doctor After She Almost Died at his “Private Surgical Center”
A woman in Southern California sued her doctor after she almost died following a procedure. The physician, a respected OBGYN doctor told her she should use a clinic outside of the hospital when her fetus had to be removed after dying prematurely. Since she was a nurse and knew him she thought it would be OK.
The doctor told her that the surgical center would be less expensive and that her insurance wouldn’t cover the procedure. The doctor had staff privileges at a hospital nearby but convinced her to go to the surgical center. The patient paid $800 cash for the procedure and the doctor put the money in his pocket. He did not give her a receipt. The woman was vulnerable at the time because she had just lost her baby.
After the procedure, the patient began to bleed profusely. She required another emergency procedure and eventually was taken by ambulance to the nearby hospital. She spent three days in the intensive care unit.
The worst part about it? The doctor was part owner of the surgical center and that’s why he wanted to perform the surgery there. Also, it turned out her insurance company would have paid for the surgery after all.
The outcome of the lawsuit is unknown but the doctor claims he did nothing wrong. As hard as it is when one is under stress, especially with the loss of a child, always seek medical care at a known medical center and never pay cash. Always get a receipt. Have witnesses. Even if you feel you know a particular doctor, be careful. Be suspicious if there is no staff around.

Awful
