One of the worst things I’ve experienced with cancer is losing my hair. But recently I read that a tech company called Cooler Heads has received FDA clearance to sell its scalp cooling device to help cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy save their hair.

The CEO of Cooler Heads is a woman called Kate Diligan and she founded the company in 2018. She is a cancer survivor herself. After Kate was diagnosed with breast cancer, she spent $8,000 on traditional cold cap therapy. After talking with countless cancer patients frustrated by the high cost, poor fit, and difficulty of use of existing methods, Kate was determined to engineer a better way.

The new device is called Amma. It is designed to be shipped directly to the patient and wholly self-administered by the patient. Because the unit is portable, the patient can complete cooling at home after their chemo infusion.

I hope I don’t need the device by the time I am finished with chemo because I hope to be finished soon. But I think it’s great when people use their pain to provide a better life for other people. Way to go, Kate!
