Carol Bryan has shared her story in the media about cosmetic injections that caused her face to be deformed.  Her journey has been hard but today she is grateful for those who helped her through the whole ordeal.

At the age of 16, Carol started modeling and she was known for her beauty.  However, later in her career she was persuaded to have injections done to maintain her youthful appearance. The fillers that were injected into Carol’s face were “permanent” fillers.  Her face became distorted.  Her face was swollen and she could not leave her house.  But measures to correct the damage made her face even worse.  She didn’t leave her house for several years which caused isolation, emotional and physical pain.

Fortunately for Carol, she had her daughter by her side.  She also had a friend who helped her reach out to teaching hospitals throughout the U.S.  Amazingly, only one doctor reached out to help her.  That was Dr. Reza Jarrahy at the UCLA Department of Plastic Surgery.  While he was compassionate and wanted to help, Dr. Jarrahy had to let Carol know about the risks associated with revision surgery. Dr. Jarrahy reached out to a panel of doctors and one surgeon, Dr. Brian Boyd offered to help. Dr. Boyd is a renowned microvascular surgeon in Southern California. So now Carol was under the care of two amazing surgeons.  What was ahead for Carol is hard to believe.

Among many surgeries that Carol had to endure, one was a 16 hour procedure where all of the muscles and tissue were removed on her forehead.  Skin was taken from her back to use for her forehead.  It was a risky surgery and the surgeons were unsure how it would work out because it was a new procedure for her specific case.  In fact, one of the risks for her surgeries was blindness and Carol became blind in her right eye.

Despite the severe trauma that Carol faced, today she is helping others with her story.  With the people who stepped up to help her, she has realized that there are many people who care if you ask for help.  Most importantly, her relationship with her daughter is stronger than ever.

What we can learn from Carol’s experience:

Carol went to a “cosmetic surgeon” who was not a Plastic surgeon and not Board Certified.  What he injected into her face was not FDA approved and it was permanent.  Check your doctor’s credentials and look for a board certified doctor in Plastic Surgery if you are planning to have facial surgery.  For injections, look for a qualified provider and ask for references and credentials.  Make sure the injections are FDA approved and right for your face.  The injections should not be permanent, such as silicone fillers.  If you have a bad feeling about the person doing the injections, go with your gut feeling.  Be especially careful about fillers close to the eye area.
