On March 18, 2022, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) published an article about breast cancer screening guidelines from the American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging. Here are the findings:
For persons at average risk, annual screening mammography at age 40 confers the greatest reduction in breast cancer mortality. Mammography is specialized medical imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to see inside the breasts. A mammography exam is also known as a mammogram. It helps with the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases.
Screening should continue past 74 years old without an upper age limit unless significant disease or disorders limit life expectancy. Breast cancer risk assessment should be performed by age 30. Regular Breast Cancer screening with mammography reduces mortality by approximately 40% for women aged 40 and older.
