Dabney Coleman was well known as an actor especially for such hits as 9 to 5 with Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin.  He was also a prominent character in the movie, Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman.  In later life, he portrayed a successful lawyer with his own firm in the TV series, The Guardian with Simon Baker as his son.  He was a prolific character actor and he played many different roles across movies and TV throughout his career.

Sadly on May 16, 2024 Dabney Coleman succumbed to cardiopulmonary arrest (also known as sudden cardiac arrest).  He was 92 years old.  According to the Mayo Clinic, cardiac arrest is the sudden loss of all heart activity due to an irregular heart rhythm. Breathing stops. The person becomes unconscious. Without immediate treatment, sudden cardiac arrest can lead to death.

Sudden cardiac arrest is different from a heart attack in that a heart attack occurs when blood flow is blocked to a part of the heart whereas sudden cardiac arrest is not due to blockage. However, a heart attack can cause a change in the heart’s electrical activity that leads to sudden cardiac arrest.

Although there are symptoms that can precede cardiac arrest, often sudden cardiac arrest occurs without warning.  Emergency responders will try to perform CPR or use an AED (automated external defibrillator).

Dabney Coleman was such a great actor. I liked him in the Guardian. The role seemed to suit him well. A really unique actor.
