Mac Sinise (formally McCanna Anthony) was the son of actor Gary Sinise and Moira Sinise.  Sadly, he passed away on January 5th, 2024. You may remember Gary Sinise from movies and T.V. such as Forrest Gump, Apollo 13 and CSI (Crime Scene Investigation).  Aside from acting, Gary Sinise started the Gary Sinise Foundation to help veterans.  Gary’s son, Mac was active in the foundation and worked closely with his father beginning in February 2017.  But along the way, Mac was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Chordoma.

The Chordoma Foundation defines chordomas as tumors that are part of a group of malignant bone and soft tissue called sarcomas.  It is rare as it represents only about 3 percent of all bone tumors and about 20 percent of primary spinal tumors. Chordoma is diagnosed in just 1 in 1,000,000 people per year. A chordoma is often asymptomatic in the beginning and may cause symptoms for years before it is discovered by doctors.  Once diagnosed, it is difficult to treat due to critical structures where it is located such as the brainstem, spinal cord, and crucial nerves and arteries.

One of the hardest things about Mac’s diagnosis was that his mother, Moira Sinise, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer during Mac’s fight with Chordoma. While Moira Sinise recovered, unfortunately Mac did not. But there are some bright spots and some ways that the family came together during their struggle with Chordoma.  Mac was very involved with  music and he was a graduate of the USC Thornton School of Music.  He played drums and studied songwriting and composition.  He often accompanied his dad on road trips with his band.  As the cancer progressed, however, Mac switched to the harmonica.  He was still able to record some great music during his fight.

The Gary Sinise Foundation was very important to Mac and he was honored to work with the foundation.  It helps veterans, defenders, first responders and their families and others in need.  It provides programs to entertain, educate, strengthen and build communities.  Some of the highlights of the foundation include specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans, meals served to American defenders throughout the U.S. and overseas, and specially adapted vehicles provided to improve everyday life.

During Mac Sinise’s struggle he had his family at his side, his faith, his music, and his dedication to the Gary Sinise Foundation which was a proud achievement in his life.  Even though the family struggled, they did everything they could to support their son in every way.  If you feel passionate about something, it can make you feel gratified no matter what your circumstances are.  Many veterans and first responders have benefited greatly from the foundation set up by Gary Sinise and his family.  For more information visit:
