Nate (Nathan) Rhoades demonstrated the kind of strength that serves as a role model for any child or adult. He became addicted to drugs at 14 but through tremendous perseverance, patience, and hard work he overcame his addiction.  He went through substance abuse treatment, residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, counseling, and a work program.  But most notably, he found a coach who had been through the same thing as Nate.  For 8 months, his coach, 24 years old, spent 3-4 days per week, mentoring him and introducing him to activities such as weight-lifting and music.

Nate learned how to enjoy his life without drugs and due to his hard work, he made a complete recovery.  Nate became MVP on his high school football team, became a bodybuilder and a boxer.  He also mentored and helped other kids with addiction and mental health issues.  After all of Nate’s success, he sadly passed away at the age of 21 on January 20th, 2022.  He was in a car accident involving a semi-truck.

The mayor of Ojai, Nate’s hometown, called him an inspiration to everyone who knew him.  Nate’s parents, Heidi and Larry Rhoades have found a way to honor Nate and continue his gift of helping others.  They established the Nate’s Place Wellness and Recovery Center in Oxnard, CA.  It is a 501c3 non-profit providing aftercare services for those who have recently been discharged from residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, and/or for individuals who are looking to support their recovery and mental health with healthy recreational activities and peer support recovery coaching, among other services. Coaching is available to teens and young adults (13-25), who are at risk of substance abuse and/or mental health disorders.
