I have suffered from bipolar disorder since I was little, but I have been hesitant to seek treatment besides seeing a psychiatrist and being prescribed medicine. The disorder has effected me to different extents at different points in my life, but I am wanting to seek some more permanent treatment for it. When it has been bad, I have lost jobs, relationships, and more, even on medication. I have heard of ECT treatments and similar procedures, but I must admit they have me anxious. There is an extreme negative stigma toward ECT, but I don’t quite understand why. All I know is that I have heard from people I know in my past that it is not a good idea. Can someone please explain to me why there is such a negative stigma? Is it effective?

In general, there is a lot more tolerance to many types of mental illness than there used to be. Don’t worry about what other people think. Just help yourself. See a good doctor who is well trained in psychiatry, and knows about ECT.
